Highgate Sanitorium

Heres something I plan to start at the next available opportunity emoticon
I hope to create something thats a little different to anything I've done before, and have a lot of ideas that can be put to good use within the theme.

Highgate Sanitorium is a theoretical hospital situated somewhere in London ( during the MD era ). At one time in its past it was a typical and busy hospital, but these days its used as a Nuthouse.

It'll be a huge gothic style building with many interior locations, but heres where it gets creepy :

Somewhere inside the place is a gateway to an identical version of the place, but this will reflect the dark history of the buildings past.
Much like the Silent Hills game, Highgate Sanitorium's dark version will feature blood stained walls, corpses and other disturbing stuff scattered throughout.

Thats a rough outline of the plan anyway, I hope it'll provide a new and unique map to explore emoticon

Finally made a start on this one emoticon currently working on the second location, the Sanitarium Lobby.

The main exterior area is still in a rough stage and still needs a lot of work, i thought I'd post some screenies as the project progresses emoticon

These images have been brightened slightly, the map itself is intentionally dark and shrouded in shadows.

Image
When you first arrive, all you can see is a long road toward the Sanitarium building, the building itself is obscured by the mist untill you get a little closer.

Image
As you draw closer, a very dark and imposing building appears. Most of the windows are covered in thick iron bars ( which can actually be deleted by the ST, so the map can be used for other purposes )

Image
A closer view of the building.

Development Update emoticon

The project is progressing steadily, I have about 11 locations done roughly to get the layout and how everything connects together sorted out.

What I've got so far is damn huge, on the scale of something like the Crimson Keep V2006 map, and theres still quite a few things yet to add.

I've come to realise that my original plan of making the map "Dual Use", that is making certain templates deletable so the map can be used to represent other places, just isnt possible.
By its own nature, style and theme its simply impossible to make it anything else other than what it is.
So, I'm thinking about releasing 2 versions of the same map...
One is the Lunatic Asylum - Highgate Sanitarium, the other will be retextured and its interior remodelled to make it a typical stately home of some kind.

The map is growing fairly rapidly so depending on the file size at completion, depends on whether the 2 maps will be packaged as one, or seperately.

Sceenies will be posted as soon as I start giving each individual location more attention to detail.

Time for some pics emoticon
Still lots of work to do, so some area still look a little basic untill I get round to paying special attention to each area.

Image
The lobby, this is where you appear when you walk through the main entrance. The security desk in the center of the room controls access to the elevator ( shortcut to 3rd floor ), the North Wing ( Low Risk Patients ) and the South Wing ( High Risk Patients )

Image
The visiting area for North Wing patients.

Image
The passageway leading to some of the low risk wards. These large wards house multiple patients and occupy all 3 floors of the North Wing.

Image
Inside a low risk ward.

Image
A Staff recreational room in the North Wing

Image
The Yard. An enclosed outdoor area for the low risk patients. Although most would probably spend this time nutting the walls, I'll put a basketball hoop in sometime so its doesnt look so bare.

Image
A view of the high security ward

Image
The cells in the south wing house the most dangerously deranged of the criminally insane patients. Each cell holds one patient who would spend their intire incarceration term staring at the walls of these tiny rooms.

Image
A large portion of the building houses the doctors and other employees, along with private living quarters and other facilities is this library.
As usual, I like to be a little different so desided that the roof of the library should be of a glass construction.
(the corpes in at the far end are actually medical specimens preserved and set in a display case)

Re: Highgate Sanitorium

This is the start of the journey into darkness. These images have been brightened as much as possible, the "Nightmare" side of the Sanitorium is intentionally very dark in places to allow lurking places and suprise encounters with nightmare creatures ( when added )

Image
The begining of the journey starts with the discovery of a row of mysterious artefacts hidden in a secret room inside one of the doctors offices.

Image
Touching one of the artefacts causes one of the walls to tear itself open. By all logic the passageway that is revealed should not exist, it would pass right through another room!

Image
After bravely walking down the passageway, you step out back at the room where the artefacts were stored, but they are gone, and the walls and floor look different.

Image
The docs office is now covered in filth and slime.

Image
A short walk toward the North wing wards shows you something is terribly wrong, and the way toward the lobby seems to be blocked by a display of evicerated corpses.

Image
There seems to be a way around the blocked passageway, but it looks like something big has smashed a hole through the ward walls. And it means passing through some dark places to get there.

And the rest.... is yours to explore emoticon

Re: Highgate Sanitorium

Thanks Barnabas emoticon This project ended up much bigger than I expected, but I'm very pleased how its turning out.

I wont be posting any more screenies for this project as I dont want to spoil any suprises or give away too much about it at this stage emoticon

The "Nightmare" side of the Sanitarium is fully stocked with Nightmare creatures and various weapons and ammo pickups, at the moment the map is being tested to determine suitable ammo and other item fequency based on an estimated 2 player game session.
I dont want it to be too easy, or even impossible, so there has to be a careful ballance between what could turn it from a survival horror into a creepy hack 'em up.

Theres a couple of things that I would really like to do, but dont have the ability to, and that is add keys for locked door ( Res. Evil Style ) and have various pieces of litarature written by Sanitarium employees and inmates.

Adding these could turn the map into a self contained game but as it is, it will rely heavily on ST support during a given session.
Most doors are also numbered to help with "Lock Exit" ST commands so with some imagination, and a good ST, it could turn into something even greater.

I've also assumed that players will choose to create new "non-Vampire" characters to play this map, but it is entirely possible to use it in the normal Vamp world (WoD)
Also, DM's should be aware that the difficulty quickly ramps upward, beginning with easy gangs of zombie-like creatures to much more tougher opponents. So, depending on the player team, some things may need to be deleted, or even added to, to strike a good ballance of challenge and fun.
